In order to bring legally compliant technologies to the market, two points in time are critical: development and legal assessment. Challenges often arise on both sides - developers lack the legal knowledge and legal experts lack the technical knowledge. The case study by Ernestine Dickhaut, Mahei Li, Andreas Janson and Jan Marco Leimeister, published in Electronic Markets - The International Journal on Networked Business, shows how interdisciplinary design patterns can support both development and legal assessment in court.

The interaction between new technologies and existing legislation is shown in a theoretical model. In doing so, the authors demonstrate the interrelationship between the two disciplines. The model shows how design patterns can influence the design of future systems. In addition to the added value for the development of technologies, the study has shown how design patterns make legal experts transparent when assessing the legality for the development of complex technology.
