Molecular quantum physics with synchrotron radiation

Welcome to the Molecular Quantum Physics with Synchrotron Radiation Group.

Our research addresses the following fundamental research questions:

  • What are the fundamental interaction processes of light and matter, when we go from atoms, to molecules, up to nanometer-sized clusters and droplets?

  • What can we learn from detecting the products of light-matter interactions, in particular electrons and ions? What can we learn from measuring the spectra of electrons and light as well as dynamical phenomena of molecular complexes and nano-clusters?

  • Can we use this knowledge to better understand light-matter interactions occurring in nature, for example in biological systems exposed to ionizing radiation as in radiation therapies, or even to contribute to technological developments, for example for solar energy conversion or hydrogen storage?

Most or our experiments are done at synchrotron facilities such as the ASTRID2 synchrotron at Aarhus University. We also use free-electron lasers and laser-based high-harmonic sources, and soon we'll have our own femtosecond laser system in the labs in Kassel.

Theses

We currently offer bachelor’s and master’s theses in connection with beamtimes at European research infrastructures. Field trips include visits to SOLEIL in Paris, ASTRID2 in Aarhus (Denmark), SwissFEL in Switzerland, and ELI Beamlines in Prague. In 2027/28, we also anticipate some interesting projects related to setting up our own laser laboratories.
If you are interested, please contact Prof. Mudrich or our doctoral students.
