W - Seed production

The course is a contribution to "Current topics from science and practice" and takes place in the summer semester.

The course is intended to equip participants with the tools to propagate vegetable crops independently in the home garden and to maintain pure varieties. In addition, this introduction to the subject can be a good basis and stimulus for further study of professional organic seed cultivation and organic plant breeding.

After a theoretical introduction to seed cultivation, the participants work independently in small groups to cultivate a vegetable crop in the teaching and learning garden until the seeds are ripe and discuss this in plenary sessions.

An important basis for pure variety propagation is, in addition to knowledge of pollination conditions, the carrying out of assessments and selection, which are carried out using examples. After an introduction to seed quality, seed preparation and cleaning are also practiced using practical examples.

The excursion to an organic seed farm rounds off the event and provides an insight into professional organic seed production.

1 ECTS credit, proof of performance: regular attendance, independent cultivation of crops and written documentation
