Status quo of organic poultry farming in Germany

Between 2002 and 2004 a status quo-analysis was carried out on organic poultry husbandry with the title “organic poultry production – structure, development, problems, need for political action”. The aim of the project was to conduct detailed and up to date information in the fields of animal welfare including husbandry systems and conditions, animal health and economic efficiency by representative samples. The need for political action and the need for consultancy concerning week points should be derived from the results.

Sizes of organic poultry farms range from very few animals to more than 100.000 animals in specialized large-scale enterprises. Partly there are deficiencies in husbandry conditions which can promote behavioural problems such as feather pecking and cannibalism. Recommendations on disease prevention are often not sufficiently implemented. Therefore, there still is a considerable potential to improve husbandry conditions of poultry in practice. Appropriate steps e.g. concerning consultancy, training and control seem are recommended.
