The REGINA collaboration project is funded by the BMFTR funding program “Challenges and Success Factors in the Transition to a Circular Bioeconomy.” It is dedicated to studying biogas plants (BGA), how they operate, and their integration into the German agricultural landscape. Biogas plants are currently facing challenges due to the phasing out of EEG subsidies and an environmental footprint that leaves room for improvement, requiring a reorientation of the biogas sector to ensure its economic and ecological sustainability. At the same time, as a circular economy is (re)established, BGA could play a key role and serve as a key technology for the bioeconomy. In this key role, BGA could serve as a fertilizer and nutrient hub with multifunctional utilization potential. Exploring these possibilities is the focus of this research project. The section on International Agricultural Policy and Environmental Governance evaluates governance solutions and policy recommendations to facilitate the circular economy accordingly.
