The influence of flange plates on the flexural-torsional buckling resistance of steel I-beams.

Bending-torsional buckling is a complex form of spatial instability that reduces the load-carrying capacity of steel beams, resulting in heavier sections and, consequently, higher steel consumption.
This research paper analyzes the application of a novel measure to increase the buckling resistance of steel I-beams, namely the use of tie plates arranged between the flanges.

This research aims to quantify the positive effect of gusset plates through experimental, numerical, and analytical studies.

The goal is to provide practical design rules that serve as tools for determining the positive effect of gusset plates during structural design, which will lead to lighter and more economical steel structures.

This research project will be carried out in two phases: The first phase involves theoretical and numerical investigations into the BDK resistance of beams with tie plates.

The second phase involves the practical investigation of tie plates and their role in flexural-torsional buckling through laboratory tests
