John C. Butcher Lecture at the University of Kassel
The accuracy of many numerical methods can be analysed in terms of Taylor series. In the special case of solutions to autonomous di erential equations, and approximate solutions found from numerical methods, the series can be written in terms of elementary di erentials. These series expansions are referred to as B-series. One of the central ideas is the composition group and extensions and generalizations of this group. It will be shown how important questions related to the accuracy of numerical methods for di erential equations can be expressed in terms of B-series. Intricate but practical numerical methods can be derived using these seemingly abstract ideas.

Prof. John C. Butcher Ph.D. D.Sc.; sein Name ist unzertrennbar mit der Entwicklung und Analyse moderner Verfahren für Differenzialgleichungen verbunden. Butcher-Arrays und auch Butcher-Bäume sind fester Bestandteil vieler Vorlesungen zur Numerik gewöhnlicher Differenzialgleichungen. Wir freuen uns und sind stolz darauf, mit dem 1933 in Aukland geborenen und immer noch aktiven John Butcher, eine der bedeutensten Persönlichkeiten der vergangenen Jahrzehnte auf dem Gebiet der Numerischen Lösung von Differenzialgleichungen zum Vortrag ins Kolloquium nach Kassel gewonnen zu haben.
