INCHER Research Colloquium: "Dual logics of pressure in tenure-track systems: Evidence from China" by visiting scholar Wenjuan Gao

Dr. Wenjuan Gao is an Associate Professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Beihang University, China, and currently also a visiting scholar at INCHER. We are looking forward to her talk at the INCHER Research Colloquium.

Authors Abstract:

This study reconceptualizes tenure-track systems as regimes of institutionalized pressure rather than mere evaluation mechanisms. It develops a dual-logics framework distinguishing threshold and competitive pressures, each reflecting different modes of academic selection and stratification. Drawing on evidence from China, the study illustrates how these pressures shape academic behavior and knowledge production in distinct and sometimes contradictory ways. By foregrounding pressure as a governing mechanism, the paper contributes to broader debates on performance-based governance and academic labor.
