Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Gerd Stumme

Professor Dr Gerd Stumme has been Director of the ITeG Research Center since 2007, which has been the Research Center for Information Systems Design (ITeG) at the University of Kassel since October 2014. In April 2015, Professor Stumme took on the role of Executive Director. Since then, he has been re-elected three times as Executive Director.

We refer to a human-centered understanding of knowledge, according to which sophisticated knowledge only arises and lives on through conscious reflection, discursive argumentation and interpersonal communication on the basis of pre-understandings of the world, cultural conventions and personal experiences of reality.

Professor Stumme is head of the research group Knowledge & Data Engineering (KDE). With the program of data analysis for everyone, his team is pursuing, among other things, the goal of counteracting the threat of cognitive autonomy being reduced by information systems that can no longer be controlled by humans. To this end, the research group is developing methods and tools for data analysis for everyone that support people in rational thinking, judgement and action and promote critical discourse. The research is based on the tradition of conceptual knowledge processing, which on the one hand emphasises thinking in terms – ‘symbolic knowledge processing’ – and on the other hand has a mathematical and methodological basis that has grown over decades.
