Instructions for using VPN

General information vpn

The installation of a vpn (virtual private network) will allow you to use a secure connection from your computer to the internal network of the university of Kassel. The profile uses a split-tunnel, which means that only the direct connection to the university-sites will use the university-IP-adress. All other traffic will be directed through the adress of the provider.

Why do I need a vpn-connection?

Some services provided by the university and certain internal websites can only be accessed, if you're connected to the university network. That includes the home-directory via Samba, certain online articles provided by the university library and other internal websites. When you're using a vpn, you can access those sites and services from your home or if you're on route.

Requirements

  • You need your UniAccount, which will function as your access to the dv-services provided by the university.
  • you have to install three certificates, provided on this websites after these informations
  • you have to install the Cisco AnyConnect software on your computer

Certificates for using VPN

Please make sure that you install all three certificates in order to avoid possible mistakes, when visiting the sites. If you installed the certificates in order to use eduroam, a second installation will not be necessary.

The validation of these certificates will make sure that you're using the right connection and no imposter vpn is trying to steal your password/login information (phishing).

If you click on the root-certificate and  the Uni Kassel CA certificate there will be a message saying that the certificate is already installed. This information is FALSE. Please click right on the certificate to download.

If you want to end the webVPN-session, don't just close the webbrowser! Please click on the x in a little box on the top right corner first on the webvpn-website!

Unfortunately you have to type in the URLs (website adress) by hand. Use the bar on the top right corner reading "adress".
