Important announcement: Migration of our GitLab instance to the GWDG infrastructure

Dear users,

In order to improve our infrastructure and stabilize operations, our GitLab instance (gitlab.uni-kassel.de) will be migrated to the hosting platform of the GWDG (Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen) on Wednesday, 03 June 2026.
The technical preparation has already been completed. On the migration date, we will synchronize the remaining changes and switch the DNS entry to the GWDG infrastructure at the beginning. Your repositories, issues and pipelines will be preserved.
Schedule on 03.06.2026:

  • Until 16:00: GitLab remains accessible. Changes and critical work immediately before the migration are not recommended.
  • 16:00: DNS changeover (at the start of the migration)
  • 16:00 to 20:00: Planned downtime for the final sync and DNS propagation

Registration and accounts:

  • Users of the University of Kassel: In future, registration will take place via AcademicCloud (https://academiccloud.de). Log in as usual with your university access data when you are asked to do so.
  • External users with AcademicCloud access: Set up an AcademicCloud account according to the GWDG specifications (https://academiccloud.de) and log in with it. The mapping to the Gitlab account is done via the email address.
  • External users without federated access: An AcademicCloud account is not possible. Please contact the project managers so that you can be invited again.

Important technical information:

  • SSH access: As the server changes behind the same hostname, the SSH host keys change. The next time you access the server (e.g. git clone, git push), you will be asked to confirm the new fingerprint.
    • Tip: If you receive connection errors, delete the old entry locally: ssh-keygen -R gitlab.uni-kassel.de
  • Git via HTTPS: The login takes place via SSO. Personal access tokens may be required for Git clients via HTTPS.

We thank you for your cooperation and wish you smooth use.
