The service is aimed at anyone with a UniAccount - this includes students, teaching staff and employees.

The IT Service Center is responsible for the operation and support of the eduroam service.

Description

eduroam ("education roaming") is a worldwide WLAN roaming network for educational institutions. It enables a secure and convenient Internet connection on campus and when visiting other participating institutions - using the same access data.

Alternatives

There is no alternative solution to eduroam.

3. main functions

Functions

  • Secure Wi-Fi with encryption
    eduroam uses WPA2-Enterprise or WPA3 for secure authentication and data transmission.

  • Cross-location access
    Users can use eduroam worldwide at all participating institutions without additional configuration.

  • Central login with UniAccount
    Once set up, access works automatically via the personal UniAccount.

  • Students on a semester abroad can use eduroam at partner universities abroad without having to apply for new access data.

  • Teachers and researchers at conferences benefit from WLAN access with their usual login details at other university locations.

Prerequisites

  • WLAN-enabled end device (smartphone, laptop, tablet)

  • Operating system with support for WPA2-Enterprise or WPA3

  • One-time configuration using installation help (eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool)

6. use and access

Account and login

A one-off setup is required to use eduroam. This is done via special apps (geteduroam/ eduroamCAT), which provide suitable configuration profiles for various operating systems. When logging in, the full user ID in the format accountname@uni-kassel.de and the corresponding password are required.

Data protection and security

Communication via eduroam is encrypted. Authentication takes place via the servers of the home institution (University of Kassel), so that personal login data is not transmitted to the visited institution.
