DAEF delegation visits BASE in Berlin - Site selection process is progressing

On May 20, 2026, an intensive exchange took place in Berlin between the German Working Group on Repository Research (DAEF) and the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE).

The DAEF was a guest of BASE to discuss the current status of the site selection process for a final repository for highly radioactive waste and the resulting scientific issues for the future. The legally stipulated site selection process is developing purposefully and is approaching a decisive phase: in fall 2027, the proposal for the possible site regions will be presented by the BGE (Federal Company for Final Disposal). Regional conferences will then be held in the regions involved, which will play a key role in involving the public and regional stakeholders. Preparations for these conferences are already in full swing. The A&O department will contribute the scientifically oriented "6th Site Selection Days" together with KIT Karlsruhe in 2028.
