MMS @ Campus Festival: Insights into Research During an Interactive Tour

On May 21, 2026, the Human-Machine Systems Engineering Department opened its laboratories to the public as part of an interactive tour during the University of Kassel’s campus festival. A wide variety of human-machine interfaces for public transportation were demonstrated, and attendees were given insight into the practical development and testing of user-centered assistance systems.

In the department’s mobility lab, not only were various passenger displays presented, but participants were also able to try out a wide range of prototypes for themselves. In the tram simulator, participants were able to shift their perspective and independently test the requirements in this specific context of the human-machine interface.

In addition, visitors gained insights into research on augmented reality (AR) assistance systems. With the Microsoft HoloLens, AR could be experienced firsthand, and in the simulation lab, virtual worlds were demonstrated using a room-filling stereoscopic projection. As part of the event, visitors were given the opportunity to traverse a virtual replica of Kassel’s Königsplatz by physically moving on a treadmill.

Enthusiasm, curiosity, and many thought-provoking questions demonstrated a strong interest in the future of human-machine interaction. Therefore, we would like to continue offering the opportunity to gain insights into our research and to participate in an exciting study. For more information and available dates, follow the link:
