Programming an Industrial Robot

The ABB IRB 140 6-axis robot available in the Measurement and Control Engineering department can be programmed and simulated using the ABB RobotStudio software (offline programming).

For this lab, three exercises will be conducted in the storage cell of the µPlant model factory, where a container filled with water will be transferred from one pallet to another on the picking table. The pallet will then be stored on a high-bay rack.

Implementation/Description

Each group consists of 3–5 participants. During the internship, each participant creates three of their own RAPID programs, which are tested in the simulation and in the robot cell.

Each experiment lasts 3 1/2 hours.

Required materials/prerequisites:

  • PC with Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • ABB RobotStudio (educational version)
  • CAD skills

The ABB RobotStudio program can be installed on your own computer, but is also available in the MRT department’s computer lab (Room 1722).

Experiment steps:

  1. Install ABB RobotStudio
  2. Exercise 1: Path Tracking
  3. Exercise 2: Create a RAPID program
  4. Exercise 3: Create a program for repalletizing
  5. Simulating the exercises
  6. Performing Exercise 3 in the storage cell

Experimental Setup

The practical portion takes place in the storage cell of the µPlant model factory (Room 1805, Building 7) using the ABB IRB140 robot and the IRC5 controller (see photo above).
