Course: Fatigue and Near Surface Properties

Lecturer

  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Niendorf

Learning objectives

  • Knowledge: Students will learn the procedures for testing materials and components under cyclic loading and the underlying damage mechanisms. They will also gain knowledge regarding procedures that can be used to increase the strength of components subjected to monotonic loading.
  • Skills: Students will learn to evaluate stress conditions and take measures to increase strength of components.
  • Competencies: Students will be able to assess components with regard to their load-bearing capacity. They will also learn to design the components for advanced applications.

Contents

  • Assessment and quantification of different load-time characteristics
  • Performance of fatigue tests
  • Damage and failure mechanisms
  • Determination of material strength
  • Damage evolution
  • Crack initiation and propagation
  • Methods for boundary layer optimization and lifetime increase

The course is only open for students who have not yet attended the lecture "Schwingfestigkeit und Randschichtoptimierung"!
