MecaNano Summer School 2025 in Kassel

70 international researchers at Kassel Univeristy for a week of cutting-edge nanomechanics training

The University of Kassel hosted around 60 international early-career researchers and 10 leading experts for a week of advanced tutorials and hands-on training in the nanomechanics of materials. Topics ranged from nanoindentation and small-scale plasticity to molecular dynamics simulations, thin-film mechanics, and machine learning for nanomechanics.

The event was organized by Prof. Benoit Merle and his group within the framework of the MecaNano EU COST Action, with Dr. Megan Cordill, Prof. Christoph Kirchlechner, and Prof. Yolita Eggeler serving as co-chairs. International trainers included experts from universities and research institutes in Europe, the USA, and Israel, ensuring a rich and diverse scientific program.

In addition to the excellent scientific sessions, the summer school provided many opportunities for participants to network and build collaborations. Social and team-building activities fostered a dynamic and friendly atmosphere, encouraging the exchange of ideas across career stages. Participants enjoyed the highlights of Kassel and the University campus, and also praised the impeccable organization of the event. The summer school also achieved a strong gender and geographical balance, reflecting the commitment to diversity and inclusion of COST actions.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Vice-President René Matzdorf for his opening speech and to the presidency of the University of Kassel for its support. We also thank all trainers and attendees for contributing to the success of the MecaNano Summer School, and we look forward to welcoming them again soon in Kassel.
