Optimisation of measurement strategies for site assessment with LiDAR

The successful transition of the energy system towards renewable energies requires a consistent expansion of wind energy. The precise determination of wind potential is the central prerequisite for an economically successful implementation of wind farm projects and thus forms the basis for a positive development of the wind energy sector. In a holistic approach the research project LiMeS investigates and optimises different aspects of this resource assessment.
Laser-based remote sensing devices (so-called LiDAR, Light Detection And Ranging) enable measurements of wind at great heights from the ground. They offer an attractive alternative to high wind measuring masts, especially due to their flexibility. In this project, the department INES investigates the opportunities of using LiDAR measurement technology. New spatially and temporally variable measurement set-ups (measurement strategies) are developed and analysed. The aim is an increase in the efficiency and accuracy of modern methods for determining the wind potential with LiDAR. The department is mainly involved in the development and improvement of measurement strategies with short-term LiDAR measurements (i.e. measurement duration of only a few months) and vertical extrapolation of wind speed. The focus is on the development of suitable methods for combining measuring mast and short-term LiDAR measurements as well as the analysis of different methods for long-term correction of short-term wind measurement data.

Long-term correction of short-term wind measurements

Comparative test of the University of Kassel successfully completed

As part of the LiMeS project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the Department of Integrated Energy Systems, supported by Fraunhofer IEE and Ramboll Cube GmbH, led a round robin test (comparison test) for long-term correction of short-term wind measurements. 29 wind consultants, planning and engineering offices, project developers, wind turbine manufacturers and other institutes and companies of the wind energy sector, mainly from Germany, participated. They received measurement data from Fraunhofer IEE and GWU Umwelttechnik with three-month periods of different seasons and used them to perform a long-term correction. In this way, measurement campaigns shortened to three months were simulated. The results were checked and analyzed on the basis of reference measurement data.

The evaluation of the Round Robin Test has now been completed. The results are presented in detail in the public final report.
