Brief description
Grids are large, heterogeneous networks of computers and other resources that are used across organizations. The seminar begins with a general overview of grid computing: terms, properties, middleware systems, existing grids, etc. In the main part, we will examine the question of how well parallel computing can be performed in today's grids and what problems still need to be solved. We look at MPI implementations for grids and grid-specific programming systems such as Ibis/Satin. Another topic is the adaptation of parallel algorithms to the characteristics of grids, especially heterogeneity and dynamically-varying resources.
The topics are developed by the participants from the existing literature, mainly from research articles. As a rule, an introductory article is provided, which is to be supplemented by the students' own research. In addition to computer science content, presentation and scientific writing techniques are practiced, discussed and evaluated.

Literature for the elaboration
- There is a very nice guide to writing scientific papers from the Department of Ecological Agricultural Sciences. The guidelines mentioned there are binding for this seminar!
- If you would like to know more about the topic (especially with regard to a later diploma thesis), we recommend the guidelines for scientific work from FB6.
- Peter Rechenberg: Technisches Schreiben (nicht nur) für Informatiker, Hanser, 2003.
- Justin Zobel: Writing for Computer Science, Springer, 2004.
- Otto Kruse: Keine Angst vor dem leeren Blatt, Campus Verlag, 2002, contains, among other things, a 15-step guide to creating scientific texts
Literature on presentation

Participants
Students of computer science from the 5th semester and other interested parties. Depending on the chosen topic, crediting in the Bachelor's or Master's program in Computer Science is possible. Alternatively, the course can be credited as a seminar, in the compulsory elective area of practical computer science or in the application area of software tools.
Time/Place
Monday 13.00 - 14.30 in room 0646 (computer pool of the department).
On 25.10.06 there was a preliminary discussion with topic assignment.
Scope
