Grid Control and Grid Dynamics

The Grid Control and Grid Dynamics group researches the control and stability of inverter-dominated grids and supports grid operators and industry with analyses and studies for grid planning and grid operation. The focus is on dynamic stability analyses (including transient, frequency, and voltage stability, inertia estimation, and converter-induced instabilities) based on RMS and EMT simulations, and their assessment using Dynamic Stability Assessment (DSA) methods.

The group develops and implements dynamic plant- and grid-models, DSA tools and methods, as well as stabilizing measures and decision-support solutions for transmission system operators. Software tools used include Python, PowerFactory, PSCAD, PSS/E, Modelica, and Julia, complemented by the IEE LI-SA-RD DSA tool.

We work in close collaboration with national and international grid operators, manufacturers, and research networks.

The partnership with the Fraunhofer IEE group on Grid Control and Grid Dynamics strengthens the transfer of fundamental research into applied research, and supports joint research projects, workshops, and supervision of research activities, as well as master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.
