Research Talk by Prof. Yuzhen Qin

On Friday, January 17, at 10:00am, Prof. Yuzhen Qin (Radbout University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands) will present his research on the following topic:

"Towards Predictable Brain Stimulation for Epilepsy: A Control Systems Perspective"

Abstract: "Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders worldwide. Brain stimulation offers an alternative treatment to medication and surgery its non-invasive or minimally invasive nature, as well as its reversibility and adjustability. By modulating brain activity, it provides flexible and adaptable treatment options. Despite its promise, current stimulation therapies have not yet reached their full potential. Aiming to advance these treatments, we adopt a control-theoretic perspective, viewing the brain as a control system (plant) and electrical stimuli as control inputs.
In this talk, I will present our work on understanding the mechanisms of brain stimulation through vibrational control. Additionally, I will introduce a framework for modeling individualized brain networks based on neural recordings. Leveraging networks of bistable oscillators, this framework holds promise for designing personalized brain stimulation protocols, utilizing principles of tractable control system design."
