Free German, English, Spanish, and French courses starting in the 2026–27 winter semester for all students at the University of Kassel

In the languages listed, one course per semester can be booked free of charge through the “Patenplatz” program, up to a maximum of two courses over the course of the degree program (specialized language courses and the “Intercultural Communication” course from the “Studium International” program can be booked in addition).

The number of free spots is limited—registration is on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Our tip: Take the placement test early so that you’ll already have the registration code needed to sign up when registration opens on September 14 (all languages except German) or October 14, 2026 (German), you will already have received the registration code required for enrollment. Please note that there are no longer any free or refundable “mentor spots” available in any other languages; however, many departments will, upon request, recognize the ECTS credits earned in these courses as additional key competencies within your major.
