Application to withdraw from an exam / resit

Note: An application to withdaw from an exam/resit must be made as soon as the reason for the impediment is known. Subsequent requests will not be accepted.

If the application could not be submitted on time for valid reasons, the reason for this must be substantiated by providing suitable documentation.

Applications submitted after the deadline (second Wednesday in March for winter semester and last Wednesday in August for summer semester) will not be accepted.

Who is allowed to rewrite an exam?

In principle, the University of Kassel only allows the following three groups to retake courses:

  • Students who can have the credit points (ECTS) credited to their degree program.
  • Students who need the language as a fixed requirement for their degree or as an official condition for admission.
  • International exchange students who have the ECTS credited via their Learning Agreement.

Exception:
For the major UNIcert® examinations (UNIcert® I Part 4, German UNIcert® II, English UNIcert® II Part 3, UNIcert® III), anyone may submit an application.

  • Important for self-paying students (including employees and external students): There is an examination fee (30 € for university members / 72 € for external persons).

What reasons are accepted?

A later date will only be approved for valid reasons for which you are not responsible (according to § 15 of the examination regulations).

Yes - These reasons count (please enclose supporting documents):

  • Illness or accident
  • Illness or death of a close family member

No - Unfortunately, these reasons do not count:

  • High workload or excessive demands
  • Professional obligations or short-term internships
  • Private appointments (e.g. family celebrations)

If your application is approved:

You will receive a registration code from us by e-mail for the next possible examination date. Please use it to register as soon as possible.

Please note the following deadlines (in each case by 12:00 noon):

  • For the winter semester: By the third Wednesday in March
  • For the summer semester: By the first Wednesday in September

You will find the registration for the catch-up date in the course offer of the respective language under the item "Resit".

If your application is rejected: If we are unable to approve your application, we will of course also inform you of this by e-mail.

Please note:

1. ONLY the following groups of people are entitled to sit their exam on these alternative dates:

• Students at the University of Kassel who have the ECTS credited to their degree programme
• Students at the University of Kassel for whom proof of their level in the relevant target language is required for their degree programme or is a condition stipulated in their letter of admission to the University
• international exchange students at the University of Kassel who have the ECTS credited to their learning agreement.

2. An exception can only made for UNIcert® end-of-level examinations (UNIcert® I, Part 4, German UNIcert® II, English UNIcert® II, Part 3, separate UNIcert® III exam). In these cases, all candidates can apply for a resit. However, a fee of €30 (resp. €79 for external course guests) is payable for all persons not listed under 1. 

Accepted reasons for applying for a resit exam in accordance with § 15 of the General Provisions for Examination Regulations for Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at the University of Kassel:
• Illness, accident, illness or death of a close family member, etc. (please enclose supporting documents)

Other reasons such as an unexpectedly high workload, a family celebration, commitments at work, an internship undertaken at short notice or a feeling of being overwhelmed etc. are not valid reasons for withdrawing from an exam.
