AI in teaching
You teach during a unique time, as a unique generation, at a unique university. You yourselves are still familiar with “the old way” of learning, teaching, and actively engaging in scholarship. Yet you are also experiencing firsthand the new way of doing all of this.
The use of AI should not merely facilitate or accelerate learning processes, but rather expand subject-specific learning, stimulate reflection, and support the development of competencies. At the same time, it is important to preserve and further develop fundamental ways of thinking and working. Since requirements and potential applications vary across disciplines, subject-specific solutions are necessary. Transparent regulations governing the use of AI, along with refined forms of teaching, testing, and assessment, provide guidance and ensure fairness.
On the “AI and Teaching” page, we have compiled some points for reflection and recommendations on how and which AI tools can assist you with the tasks of “planning and designing instruction.”
On the “AI and Learning” page, you’ll find recommendations that you can use for your own planning and design tasks as well as share with your students.
On the “AI and Assessment” page, you’ll find specific suggestions to consider when conducting exams in the “AI era.”

They are not Services provided by the University of Kassel nor are they contractually guaranteed. In addition, we offer a pilot program for professors to test and further develop AI-supported teaching and examination formats. If you are interested, please feel free to contact us for registration.
Overall, our recommendations stem from our examination of these issues using a critical yet constructive approach.
The updated document “Artificial Intelligence in Teaching” from the University of Kassel, dated May 13, 2026, provides a fundamental framework. It explains the current situation and applicable regulations and is continuously updated in light of dynamic developments.

The use of AI applications in teaching must take place within a legally sound framework.
As a general rule, applicable laws must be observed and enforced, even in the case of emerging technologies
such as artificial intelligence systems. Of particular note are copyright law under the German Copyright
Act (UrhG), data protection law under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
, and the Hessian Data Protection Act (HDSIG).
Access to AI applications for ChatAI has been thoroughly tested; free access is available to all members of the University of Kassel with a university account.
As long as AI remains ad-free, its use is still relatively “neutral.” As soon as this changes, opportunities for one-sided—including political—influence will arise.
