Sustainable Democracy Symposium - Register now

"Sustainable democracy" symposium:
What to do when the world goes off the rails?
Teaching and learning in the context of existential social crises

University of Kassel
Nora-Platiel-Straße 5 | Room: 0109/0110

Climate crisis, growing social inequalities, anti-democratic movements, wars, digitalization and dealing with migration pose challenges to democratic achievements and their
design. In this context, the demands on
political education are increasing: Democracy should be strengthened, responsible, responsible people should be promoted
and skills for an increasingly complex world should be taught.
But what does it mean in concrete terms to take current challenges seriously in everyday school and university life? What responsibilities do teachers have? How can civic education address issues relating to current crises?

The aim of the symposium on May 21, 2025 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the University of Kassel is to create a space to address these pressing questions. It is being organized by
trainers from the Studienseminar für Gymnasien in Kassel, the department
Didaktik der Politischen Bildung and the Zentrum für Lehrer:innenbildung at the University of Kassel
.

The symposium will begin with an introductory lecture that will shed light on central topics of social crises
and political education from a scientific and didactic perspective. Workshops will then offer the opportunity to explore selected aspects in greater depth.
Together, we would like to explore ways to counteract isolation and powerlessness
. We invite teachers, students, lecturers and other interested parties to
the symposium to think about new approaches, develop concrete courses of action and network at
. Another aim of the symposium is to develop perspectives for future joint cooperation.
