Freelance editing (2-day workshop)*
In addition to working as an employee, becoming self-employed is another option for humanities scholars. For someone with a passion for language, working with texts—such as freelance editing—is a natural fit. The core task of freelance editors is to ensure and optimize the quality of a text. With a keen sense of language and comprehensive knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, editors review and refine their clients’ texts and publications. They also revise texts in terms of stylistic, visual, and argumentative structure.
Through practical exercises, workshop participants gain initial insights into the various areas of work in freelance editing. They also learn what to consider when embarking on a path to self-employment and what knowledge and skills are necessary to succeed as a freelancer.

The workshop will be led by Anna Lina Dux, who has been working as a freelance editor since 2014. She holds a master’s degree in German Studies, Philosophy, and Political Science and worked for several years as a research assistant and instructor for special assignments at the University of Kassel. In addition to her work as a freelance editor, she continues to teach courses at the department as an adjunct instructor.
The workshop will take place on January 22and February 5, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day, as an in-person event on the Holländischer Platz campus. You will receive details about the room via email well in advance of the event.
Active participation is required to receive a certificate of attendance. It is also possible to earn a credit for additional key competencies (course type: “Key Competency Courses at the University of Kassel”) if, in addition to attending both days, you successfully complete coursework in the form of additional assignments. IMPORTANT: If you have already participated in an earlier workshop led by Ms. Dux on “Freies Lektorat” as part of the practical training program, you may participate again, but you will not receive any additional credit for supplementary key competencies.
The workshop is offered by Department 02 (Humanities and Cultural Studies), but is also open to students from other departments if space permits.
