    Work and communication style

Teaching a professional habitus for sociologists is important to me. Both BA and MA students should develop an understanding of how to enact the specificity of a sociological gaze. Part of this performance is balancing distance and proximity. One must be able to be unaffected as well as sympathetic. Unconcernedness assures insight, sympathy assures engagement.

This general goal is served by my preferred style of work and interaction. Students should be put in a position to be able to bracket themselves and their own values, as well as to be able to use their own subjectivity and their ideas of a better life as an instrument of insight. This requires that one learns to appreciate the solitude of self-reflection as well as the freedom of self-organization.

I therefore do not believe in false aloofness as well as in fearful self-denial in the interaction between teachers and learners. We are, in the literal sense, communitions, that is, comrades-in-arms in the service of a truth that is not only our own. I expect a willingness to engage in self-constructive learning, but I do not believe in letting someone who knows the subject tell you what is important and what is not so important. For me there are three criteria for the assessment of performance:

    1. one must be able to reproduce things correctly. 2. one must be able to apply them to new facts. 3. one must be able to weight and refute introduced sociological arguments in relation to other arguments. It goes without saying that at the first level one achieves sufficient, at the second level satisfactory and at the third level good and very good results.
