Various processes can be identified that are changing the political system of the Federal Republic of Germany. These currently observable upheavals, which can be seen in the party and association system as well as in the welfare state, have as yet unpredictable effects on the political system as a whole. The question arises as to which driving forces trigger these processes of change and how they alter the conditions for good governance in the German model.

• Social policy/welfare state, labor market policy/industrial relations and their actors in transition
One research focus concentrates on the changes of actors in the field of labor relations (trade unions and employers' associations) and welfare state policy (social and welfare associations). In addition to the change in internal structures, the focus is also on the effects on the external ability to cooperate and communicate with other actors. This includes not only the relationships between collective actors, but above all those between the state and associations.

The association system is characterized by a variety of different collective interest groups and types of organization. The various areas of interest, differentiated association functions and instruments of interest mediation are similarly colorful.
