Introductory Project | Discovering Spaces | Function and Space: A Piece of the Open City
This summer, the introductory project will focus on the themes of “The City of Tomorrow” and the question, “What will our lives, work, and communication look like in the future?” To this end, we’ll use the 2022 Paul Bode Prize and the Port of Kassel as our starting point and testing ground. We are seeking innovative concepts and visions that bring together the themes of living and working and seek to integrate additional topics such as self-sufficiency and energy production.
Local conditions will provide further input to help identify and leverage both identity and heritage, as well as address environmental factors and the theme of “living by, in, and above the water.” The associated infrastructure will also be incorporated into the development of your “piece of the city.”
To create a dense urban fabric, the harbor will be divided into parcels, and each team of two will be assigned a portion of the new neighborhood to be developed. In this way, all designs will contribute to formulating a shared vision and enriching Kassel with a new neighborhood characterized by a high quality of life, diverse uses, and social diversity.

OPENING OF THE Infra Tower at the "Hugenottenhaus Art Complex"
In conjunction with the exhibition “erste hilfe – first aid” at the Hugenottenhaus, the Infra Tower, created by the Department of Design and Building Studies, will be unveiled as part of documenta 15. The Infra Tower is a vertical wooden structure that symbolizes the activities of the art area at the Hugenottenhaus and is open to further thoughts, ideas, and interventions.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of everyone involved, a special “lighthouse” has been created—a spatial infrastructure that rises above the billboard of the art zone and draws attention to it. In addition, the tower serves as a platform for further concepts. It can be disassembled and used elsewhere as a symbolic “beacon” and “idea catcher.”
The project was designed during the winter semester 21/22 by students from the departments of Design and Building Science and Structural Design at the University of Kassel in cooperation with the Hugenottenhaus and was now implemented during the summer semester 22 as part of the “Building 1:1 with AR (Augmented Reality)” seminar.
The seminar taught techniques for using digital technology and AR to visualize the tower components, connections, and assembly sequences, with the aim of supporting on-site construction—including material fabrication, site preparation, and assembly-related tasks—using both digital and analog tools. This allowed students to experiment with a 1:1 AR workflow, including a remote system setup consisting of a laptop running Rhino3D, Grasshopper, and HoloLens 2 connected via Wi-Fi, as well as the option to use their own AR-capable handheld devices.
