In recent semesters, our department has mapped a vacancy of at least

220,000 m² in Kassel – space for around 2,400 apartments. In this seminar, we analyze the results of the vacancy mapping and base them to theoretical concepts: What are the reasons for vacancy? Where are the vacancies located within the city? How does the German tax system influence vacancy? What are the costs and rental prices for new construction compared to renovation of existing buildings? And last but not least: What does vacancy mean for the city?

The aim is to use graphical representations to create public awareness of the complexity of the indicators and the social, political, and ethical contexts of vacancy in Kassel and beyond.

In the seminar, we will read relevant literature on critical mapping, property issues, and urban political economy.
