Introductory studio | discovering spaces | building bridges for vibrant and regenerative spaces in Bettenhausen
In the introductory project "Building bridges for lively and regenerative spaces in Bettenhausen", we are looking at the principles and the task of the HNW Award (formerly the Paul Bode Prize) 2024. This award aims to connect the districts of Bettenhausen and Unterneustadt with the center of Kassel and to address the problems caused by the planning of a "car-friendly city" in the area of the Platz der Deutschen Einheit and the traffic circle, which leads to considerable development disturbances in the districts. Our aim is to investigate the potential of the area, to discover and strengthen its identity and to create innovative living and working spaces in the process.
In the introductory project, the students will work on a section of the competition site and develop a self-formulated spatial program in order to develop hybrid urban building blocks with additional offers in the interior and exterior areas.
The focus will be on social sustainability. In order to create a dense and lively urban structure, the planning area will be divided into plots and each team of two will receive a share of the new quarter to be developed. In this way, all designs contribute to formulating a common vision for a hybrid urban building block with a high quality of stay, diversity of use and social mix.
Semester schedule:
- warmUP "regenerative spaces"
- Excursion week: Workshop construction site visit + Kassel Unterneustadt & Bettenhausen
- Research: "hybrid concepts in space and program"
- Draft "structure/ spatial sequence/ transformation"
- Elaboration and presentation

We look forward to an exciting collaboration!
Vertical project design-build project "Gomde: Places of change"
Together with the architecture departments of three universities - the University of Innsbruck, the University of Kassel and the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture - places of meditation and silence were created on the site of the center.
The six interventions were conceived as temporary, experimental structures that connect with the surrounding nature and appeal to the senses. They primarily worked and experimented with regional materials and production methods. The six interventions were implemented with the students in cooperation with local partners.
The "Places of Change" were opened on June 8, 2024 during the Architecture Days and will be accessible to visitors to the Buddhist Center throughout the year as part of the Capital of Culture.
More information about the project
As part of the Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024, the project "Gomde: Places of Change" was realized under the project sponsorship of Rangjung Yeshe Gomde Germany-Austria together with the architecture institutes of three universities - the University of Innsbruck AT, University of Kassel DE and UCL Bartlett School of Architecture GB.
The project consists of six artistic interventions in the form of temporary sculptures for meditation. The sculptures are conceived as artistic, experimental structures that connect with the surrounding nature and appeal to the senses. Regional materials (wood and clay) were primarily used in order to take into account exemplary aspects of sustainability, such as decomposability.
The six artistic interventions are located in the area of the site dedicated to grassland (see map). The sculptures will be designed and realized by the students as part of their courses. The aim is to create contemporary artistic interventions that blend into the Bäckerberg landscape and invite visitors to find peace and quiet. Furthermore, the artistic and exemplary use of sustainable materials and production methods should also contribute to a discussion of content within the framework of the Capital of Culture.
The design, production and documentation of both art installations on a 1:1 scale are key aspects of the project, in which the students gained experience and learned through the use of advanced technology (extended reality and 3D scanning tools) in combination with traditional timber construction methods. Local experts and carpenters worked with us to steam bend locally sourced larch strips (best for outdoor use) to achieve the challenging geometry of both projects: one hanging from trees in a forest and one positioned lightly on the lawn. Both projects are looking for sustainable ways to dismantle and/or reuse all project materials in the future.
