Thesis
If you are interested in writing a thesis at the department on one of the listed or other topics, please contact us as early as possible to discuss everything further together.
- Clarification of formal requirements with the SPS.
- At least one graded course in the field of environmental meteorology taken
- Participation in the course "Conducting a climate study" is highly recommended
- In case of increased demand for supervision, we select based on the quality of the exposé and prefer topics related to current research questions or suggested topics (link topic list)
- The thesis can be submitted in German or English, depending on the study and examination regulations.
- Development of a rough idea or taking up a proposal
- Contacting potential supervisors at the Department of Environmental Meteorology
- Submission of a 1 - 2 page synopsis to the supervisor at least three weeks before the deadline of the SPS.
- Coordination and, if necessary, revision of the exposé
- Submission of the exposé to the SPS
- For Master's theses: Thesis may also be submitted in format in preparation for publication in a journal article. Discuss early if interested
- We usually offer at least two to three meetings for discussion and consultation for Bachelor theses.
- In case of difficulties, seek independent exchange with supervisor and arrange additional appointments in time
- Scope varies, depending on the methodology used (e.g. own measurements, modeling shorter, for literature studies without own data collection longer)
- Independently interact with students at FG who are also writing theses
- Independently coordinate feedback and coordination with second supervisor
Thesis topics
Other topics, especially related to courses and research projects, are also possible.
Urban climate analyses in Germany and worldwide
In Germany, urban climate analyses and planning reference maps (VDI 3787 part 1) are one of the essential instruments to consider urban climate and local climate in planning processes. Also worldwide, urban climate analyses are increasingly used in planning processes. So far, however, there is no overview of how many cities in Germany, but also globally, have carried out urban climate analyses, how this is done, how the data is provided, what content is presented and whether or how the quality and reliability is checked. On the basis of an internet research for one country (depending on language skills also in China, India or in the Arabic region) the existing urban climate analyses will be systematically compared and contrasted.
Evaluation and optimization of local climate services for climate change adaptation for theSpecialized planning
In order to make climate impacts accessible to interested use cases, there is an increasing focus on so-called Climate Services, which provide local climate information e.g. in portals. How effective such platforms are has been studied only sporadically. The aim of this work would be to identify typical features of such platforms and to evaluate their usability, e.g. by means of surveys or interviews, or to create a guide for effective climate services for climate change adaptation on the basis of existing (English-language) literature.
Sponge city new concept or old hat: origins of sponge city approaches in German/European open space planning.
The topic of sponge cities has been increasingly discussed in recent years. In principle, this is not a new topic, but one that has been described for decades, e.g. under local stormwater management. Thus there are numerous examples both in Germany and internationally. The goal of the work would be to present the history of the term and the method and to collect and describe already existing best practice examples, as well as to question their implementation critically and in the sense of an optimization.
The climate of Kassel
Kassel has a special location, which among other things leads to the increased occurrence of foggy days. Urban development and topography also influence the spatial variability of air temperature. What is known about the climate of Kassel? What results and investigations can be compiled from literature is from scientific, historical, and student work to gain a comprehensive picture of Kassel's climate in the past and today?
Studies on green roofs in the city of Kassel
Green roofs are often discussed as a measure to adapt to heat in cities. The city of Kassel has established a demonstration area for green roofs. How effective is this green roof and the different variants? What reductions in surface and air temperature can be demonstrated?
Microclimatic modeling under different planning scenarios or design optimization
So far, climate change adaptation is insufficiently considered in the planning and development of neighborhoods and open spaces. For a concrete project area or for an existing (own) design, an assessment of the thermal load can be made by means of microscale modeling. In an iterative process, different design scenarios can thus be reviewed in terms of improving thermal comfort. This forms a basis for a discussion on how and where such investigations can be integrated into practice. In Envi-met or UMEP
