Vita
Hyo Wook Kim is a Research Associate at the Chair of Experimentelles und Digitales Entwerfen und Konstruieren (EDEK) at the University of Kassel. His work examines computational and robotic methods for circular timber construction, with a particular focus on reclaimed material systems. His research investigates how irregular, heterogeneous timber elements can be systematically analysed, classified, and transformed into buildable architectural components through data-driven workflows.
His current projects explore methodological frameworks that integrate robotic fabrication, multi-modal sensing, and computational geometry to develop reproducible and scalable processes for material-aware construction. This includes the development of adaptive joining strategies, automated segmentation and nesting routines, and AI-assisted tools for decision-making within reuse-oriented design workflows. A key aspect of his research is the evaluation of how digital technologies—such as 3D vision, LiDAR, and AR-based assembly guidance—can support human–robot collaboration in fabrication environments.
At EDEK, he contributes to research on topology optimization, machine learning for material classification, and workflow automation for reclaimed timber. He teaches design studios, seminars, and workshops that engage students in analytical and experimental approaches to robotic fabrication and computational design. Through the combination of empirical testing, digital simulation, and full-scale prototyping, his work aims to advance scientifically grounded methods for sustainable and fabrication-aware timber construction.
He holds a B.Arch from Seoul National University of Science and Technology and an M.Sc. from the ITECH programme at the University of Stuttgart. His academic background and professional experience inform his focus on method development, critical evaluation of digital tools, and evidence-based innovation for the built environment.
