The primitive equations for ocean and atmosphere

Prof. Dr. Amru Hussein (Univ. Kassel)

Abstract:

The so-called primitive equations are a fundamental model for geophysical flows derived from the Navier-Stokes equations assuming a hydrostatic balance. The aim of the talk is to give an overview on the analysis of these equations focusing on evolution equation methods. It is elaborated where these equations differ from the Navier-Stokes equations and where there are similarities. Then the regularity of initial data leading to strong solutions is discussed. Also, the hydrostatic approximation can be made rigorous in the framework of evolution equations, and stochastic perturbations can be included as well.

This talk is based on joint works with Yoshikazu Giga, Takahito Kashiwabara, and Ken Furukawa from the University of Tokyo, and Matthias Hieber, Mathis Gries, and Marc Wrona from TU Darmstadt.
