HEBEDI Lunch Talk #16 From Pirmasens to Hamburg Öjendorf: The city becomes a garden! with André Jankwitz & Bettina König
About the speakers:
André Jankwitz is a landscape architect and, as head of the garden and cemetery department of the city of Pirmasens, is responsible for the areas of open space planning and urban green planning, among others. After graduating from the Berlin-Dahlem University of Applied Sciences with a degree in landscape architecture, André Jankwitz worked in horticulture and landscaping as well as in garden and cemetery offices in various districts of Berlin before moving to Pirmasens in 1990. He is the spokesman for the Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland gardening association (GALK) and has received several awards for his commitment to the sustainable design of urban green spaces, parks and playgrounds.
Pirmasens has been committed to edible cityconcepts, be it by growing fruit and vegetables in the heart of the city, planting and caring for fruit trees that are open to the public and whose fruit can be harvested by residents, or insect-friendly flowering oases. André Jankwitz will present some of the projects that raise awareness of healthy eating with regional products and contribute to biodiversity in urban spaces. In 2020, Pirmasens was awarded the "Stadtgrün naturnah" seal in silver by the Alliance of Local Authorities for Biodiversity.
Bettina König took up the professorship "Sustainability Management in the International Food Industry" in April 2023. The agricultural scientist was a junior research group leader at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and project manager at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. She completed her doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin on "Obstacles to the conversion of vegetable farms to organic farming methods" and then carried out interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research on sustainability innovations at various stations. In Kassel, she is planning research, teaching and transfer on innovative practices of designing and organizing sustainable food systems and their interfaces with other sectors.
In the webinar, Bettina König will present the research project "New Garden City Öjendorf" will be presented. The project investigates how urban agriculture can be integrated into urban open spaces in the context of the development of the Neue Gartenstadt Öjendorf and what value creation potential can arise from this for small-scale urban agriculture businesses and for the entire horticultural sector in Hamburg. Future scenarios for multifunctional, economically viable urban agriculture are to be designed and discussed in a broad dialog process between horticultural stakeholders, urban society, politics and administration.
