Frankenhäuser Expert Discussions:

Old Breeds. New Breeding. New Opportunities.

Dual-Purpose Chickens and the Future of the Poultry Industry: The RegioHuhn Example

When: November 19, 2026, 4:00–6:00 p.m.

What opportunities do dual-purpose breeds offer for sustainable poultry farming in Hesse? How can animal welfare, regional value creation, breeding, and economic viability be combined?

The Frankenhäuser expert discussion “RegioHuhn” brings together poultry farmers, breeders, marketers, and other stakeholders in the value chain. The focus is on professional exchange, networking, and a shared perspective on practical applications.

Brief presentations from the fields of research, consulting, and practice provide insights into current developments and experiences:

  • Prof. Dr. Dirk Hinrichs (University of Kassel, Department of Animal Breeding) will report on research and breeding.
  • Dr. Christiane Keppler (Hesse State Agricultural Agency) shares insights from consulting and market development.
  • Marie Vogel (Naturland) will present the “RegioHuhn” project and, together with Christine Bremer (farmer, Heide Geflügel), will share practical experiences and insights from raising dual-purpose breeds.

This will be followed by a group discussion: What experiences, opportunities, and challenges exist in practice? What are the needs regarding husbandry, breeding, marketing, and economic viability? And what ideas can emerge from this to further develop regional and sustainable poultry farming in Hesse?

The expert discussion will be moderated by Sören Bronsert of the AKIS Hessen Coordination and Networking Office.

Afterward, a group dinner will provide an opportunity to continue the discussion in a relaxed atmosphere and network with one another.
