"Colonialism: A Workshop on Remembrance—From Concept to Place," November 9–13 in Berlin.
Thinking Workshop: Remembering Colonialism—From Concept to Place, November 9–13 in Berlin.
From the program:
“How can a place of learning and remembrance be created to explore the history of colonialism and its
continuities? What does its implementation require in today’s Berlin?
As the site of the Berlin Conference on Africa (1884–85) and the colonial metropolis
of the German Empire, the city remains to this day marked by the traces and aftereffects
of colonial history and therefore bears a special political
responsibility. The remembrance concept published in 2025 forms the basis
for the development of a central site of learning and remembrance in Berlin as part
a nationwide network of decentralized sites of remembrance.
The residency and workshop program “Remembering Colonialism—From
Concept to Place will bring together, from November 9 to 13, 2026, stakeholders from the fields of art,
architecture, activism, academia, and the practice of remembrance policy
to develop the spatial and programmatic foundations of the future
site, its integration into supraregional contexts of remembrance, and the
necessary structures and networks required for this. (…)."
As part of the think tank, Dr. Birgit Metzger and Johnny Ibraimo will give a presentation on November 11, 2026, at 11:45 a.m. titled “Colonial Legacy in Rural Areas: Workshop Report on the Development of a Remembrance Concept for the History of the German Colonial School.”
