La Via Campesina and the farmers' path to system change

Speaker: Paula Gioia

This lecture is about the history and organization of the global farmers' movement La Via Campesina, in which over 200 million farmers from all continents are organized and of which the Arbeitsgemeinschaft bäuerliche Landwirtschaft (AbL) is one of the founding members. The system-critical and transformative concept of food sovereignty was coined by La Via Campesina in 1996. Food sovereignty quickly became a movement that unites actors from different sectors of society. La Via Campesina has also become a recognized voice for farmers in international and intergovernmental forums. Film clips and other media will be used during the lecture to give participants a
powerful insight into how the global peasant movement organizes itself and develops common positions. The lecture will also aim to provide an insight into current struggles.
