Prof. Dr. Javier Becerril is a professor at the Faculty of Economics of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) in Mexico. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM), a Master of Arts in Urbanism, Economics and Environment from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and a Master in Ecological Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). He holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Kiel (CAU-Kiel). His research focuses on the agricultural and rural sector in Mexico, with a particular focus on agroecology, agrobiodiversity, food sovereignty and public policy, focusing specifically on the “Milpa Maya” in Yucatán. The title of his research project for the Wangari Maathai Professorship is "Loss of agrobiodiversity in the Mayan agricultural system: a biocultural crisis of economic origin".
