Azadeh Farajpour
A Journey from Farm to Future: My pathway through Agricultural Studies
My name is Azadeh, and my journey in the field of sustainable agriculture has been anything but conventional. Growing up on a farm in Iran, I was immersed in the world of agriculture from a young age. My mother is a nurse and my father a psychiatrist. My uncles, who are both farmers, provided me with insights into the land, soil, and the vital role that responsible farming plays in our ecosystem. This early exposure sparked my passion for agriculture, leading me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering in Iran.
In 2014, I took a significant leap of faith by moving to Germany to pursue my Master’s degree in Sustainable International Agriculture at the University of Göttingen and Kassel/Witzenhausen. This decision was not merely about advancing my education but about deepening my understanding of how agricultural practices could evolve sustainably in a rapidly changing world.
Academic pursuits at Witzenhausen
At Witzenhausen, I was able to immerse myself in a multidisciplinary curriculum that focused on sustainable practices, ranging from soil health to crop rotation and sustainable resource management. Engaging with faculty members who were leaders in their fields enriched my learning experience, and I particularly appreciated the hands-on approach to education. The research projects provided me with a platform to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, reinforcing the importance of innovation in agriculture.
I was fortunate to collaborate with an array of international students from diverse backgrounds, each with unique perspectives on agricultural challenges in their home countries. This cultural exchange was invaluable, shaping my worldview and expanding my understanding of the global nature of agricultural issues.
From student to entrepreneur
After graduating in 2018, I began working part-time at a research institute in Ulm. This role was essential in solidifying my technical skills and understanding the framework of research within the agricultural sector. It was here that the idea for my venture, betterSoil, began to take shape. Driven by a desire to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical application in farming, I envisioned a company that could help growers and suppliers enhance soil health on their farms sustainably.
In 2020, I took the monumental step of founding betterSoil. Today, I serve as the CEO of this dual-purpose organization, which operates both as a nonprofit and a for-profit entity. betterSoil provides consultancy services to companies, helping them develop practices that improve soil health and promote sustainability. I am proud to lead a team of ten dedicated professionals, each an expert in their field, ranging from agronomy to digital technology.
One of our most transformative projects is the development of a data-driven application tailored for farmers. This tool offers customized recommendations based on individual soil analyses, allowing users to make informed decisions that are vital for enhancing soil productivity and sustainability. I firmly believe that such technological innovations are essential in addressing the global challenges facing agriculture today.
Reflections on my time in Witzenhausen
Reflecting on my time at Witzenhausen, I am immensely grateful for the academic experiences that I encountered. The emphasis on a holistic understanding of agriculture, combined with practical applications, equipped me with the tools necessary to pursue a career that aligns with my passion for sustainability. I recall the inspiring lectures and discussions that illuminated the interconnectedness of soil health, climate change, and food security.
The invaluable connections I made during my studies continue to bear fruit. Many of my classmates and professors remain part of my professional network, providing support and collaboration opportunities that enhance my work at betterSoil. The drive for sustainability and innovation that I experienced at Witzenhausen continues to inspire me as I navigate the challenges of
Looking forward
As I look to the future, I remain committed to advocating for sustainable agricultural practices on a global scale. My journey from the fields of Iran to the entrepreneurial landscape in Germany is a testament to the power of education and the vital role of our collective efforts to promote sustainable agriculture.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly encourage prospective students to consider Witzenhausen as their academic home. The institution not only provided me with an education but also a community dedicated to making a difference. Together, we can shape a sustainable future, rooted in the rich traditions of agriculture and soil while fostering innovation that nurtures our planet.
