Teaching
Our goal is to train the future cycling and mobility experts that the mobility industry urgently needs in the context of the ongoing socio-ecological transformation. We rely on a diverse range of lectures and seminars covering areas such as transport planning and traffic psychology. Our courses are aimed at students from various programmes and are both scientifically grounded and practice-oriented – we have already conducted field trips to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Copenhagen, and Ethiopia, and jointly organised the cycling weeks in Kassel (Kasseler Radwochen "Cycassel") with students in an interdisciplinary seminar.
Courses – Summer Semester (SoSe) 2026

This seminar addresses current topics and developments in sustainable mobility, including the interactions between different modes of transport. Participants conduct independent research on a selected topic and present their findings. The seminar also includes preparation, execution, and follow-up for a field trip to Stuttgart and Freiburg, focusing on current developments in sustainable mobility.
Start: 21.04.2026
Time: Tuesday 14:00 – 18:00
Room: Mönchebergstr. 7 - Raum 1211
Contact: Frederik Hilden / Lena Knacker / Angela Francke
Societal and climatic changes call for sustainable strategies for future-oriented and existing-stock-oriented urban development. Students engage with the challenge of mobility- and climate-adapted neighbourhood development, focusing on the Schillerquartier in Kassel. The project is a collaboration between the departments of Cycling and Sustainable Mobility (Civil and Environmental Engineering) and Urban Renewal and Planning Theory (Urban and Regional Planning). Bridging the tension between existing conditions, mobility transition, and climate adaptation, the course combines competencies from both departments with an interdisciplinary, practice-based, and user-centred approach.

Note for MoVIn students: Both the lecture "Designing Cycling and Pedestrian Infrastructure" and the seminar "Current Issues in Sustainable Mobility" must be attended to participate in the project.

In this seminar, participants jointly plan, organise, and design the cycling weeks in Kassel (Kasseler Radwochen “Cycassel”), taking place in May 2026. The goal is to develop a diverse programme around cycling – together with societal stakeholders and for the urban community. We want to inspire people beyond the university to take up cycling and make sustainable mobility visible. The seminar is interdisciplinary, welcoming students from social sciences, sports education, the MoVIn master, sustainable business, and other disciplines.
For more information, as well as highlights and results from previous years, visit: https://cycassel.org/
The course begins in the winter semester and spans two semesters; joining in the summer semester is not possible.
