CELA coordinates the University of Kassel’s Latin America-related activities and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration in research and teaching. Its goal is to analyze social, political, and cultural developments in Latin America from various perspectives and to intensify international exchange. Through collaborations with partner institutions in Latin America and Europe, CELA creates a dynamic network for scholarly dialogue, joint projects, and academic mobility.

July 8–9, 2026: CELA 2026 Latin American Conference “Cuba: Crisis, Disputes, and Horizons”
The CELA 2026 Latin American Conference, “Cuba: Crisis, Disputes, and Horizons,” will take place on July 8 and 9, 2026, at the University of Kassel. Organized by the Center for Latin American Studies (CELA), the conference will bring together more than ten experts from Cuba as well as scholars from Latin America and Germany to examine the island’s current crisis from Cuban, Latin American, and German academic perspectives.
The focus will be on the social, economic, and geopolitical tensions shaping Cuba’s present—including migration, inequality, the state of key public service systems, the impact of U.S. policy, and the broader international context. At the same time, the conference will explore which alternatives and future prospects are currently being discussed within Cuban society.
The conference is aimed at scholars, students, and the broader public interested in Cuba’s current transformations and their broader Latin American and international dimensions. It offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with perspectives from the island itself and to understand Cuba beyond simplistic external perspectives.
A central public event of the Encuentro is the panel discussion “CUBA TODAY: Crisis, Opportunities, Future,” which will be held in German and opens the debate to a broader university and urban audience.
