Center for Latin American Studies (CELA)

CELA coordinates the University of Kassel’s Latin America-related activities and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration in research and teaching. Its goal is to analyze social, political, and cultural developments in Latin America from various perspectives and to intensify international exchange. Through collaborations with partner institutions in Latin America and Europe, CELA creates a dynamic network for scholarly dialogue, joint projects, and academic mobility.

College

Focus on Latin America

The Kassel campus offers an interdisciplinary focus on Latin America within the departments of Romance Studies, Political Science, History, and Economics.

Prospective students’ interest in politics can be ideally combined with intercultural issues and the topic of Latin America: For example, the B.A. in Political Science program includes a minor in Spanish. We also offer a module on Latin America and Cross-Area Studies in the M.A. in Political Science program.

The humanities and cultural studies programs at the Institute of Romance Studies also offer numerous courses on Latin America and the Caribbean for students of Spanish and French.

This approach to studying Latin America is optimally supported by CELA, for example throughevents, discussion groups, and meetings on current political and cultural trends, as well as through assistance in establishing academic and research contacts in the region.

Latin America and Caribbean Certificate

The Latin America and Caribbean Certificate is open to all undergraduate and doctoral students at the University of Kassel. It is of interest to anyone who wants to explore the diversity of Latin America and the Caribbean, improve their language skills, and broaden their horizons beyond their major. A wide range of courses from the Institute of Romance Studies’ academic and language programs, language courses, as well as lectures and seminars from other departments that address various aspects of Latin America and the Caribbean, can be counted toward the certificate. With this certificate, graduates demonstrate to future employers that they possess region-specific subject and language knowledge—qualities that particularly equip them for careers in international cooperation—as well as the ability to think and act in an interdisciplinary manner.
