Impacts socio-économiques et environnementaux de la Grande Muraille Verte (GMV) au Sénégal (Translation: Socioeconomic and Environmental Impacts of the Great Green Wall (GGW) in Senegal)

In June 2005, during the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Saharo-Sahelian States (CENSAD) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the concept of the Great Green Wall (GMV) stretching from Senegal to Djibouti was born as a means to combat desertification. In 2007, the idea was endorsed by the African Union as the Great Green Wall Initiative for the Sahara and the Sahel (IGMVSS), initially involving 11 countries (Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti). Since COP21 in Paris in 2015, the commitment has been to restore 100 million hectares of land, sequester 250 million metric tons of carbon, and create 10 million jobs by 2030; which ranks this project third among global and regional land restoration initiatives, following the Bonn Challenge and the New York Declaration on Forests.

This doctoral dissertation aims to contribute to updating the research data on this initiative in Senegal by addressing two (2) fundamental questions: What are the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of the IGMVSS in the affected areas after more than 15 years of operation? What innovative solutions can be implemented to reinforce the positive aspects and mitigate the negative ones?
