Political Ecology and Narratives of Soil Degradation in the Southern Region of Mali: Bougouni (Koumantou, Yanfolila, and Kolondieba)

Soil degradation and loss of soil fertility are considered among the most serious environmental problems in Africa, particularly in the Sahel countries. However, many discourses and narratives have emerged to explain soil degradation in the developing countries. The objective of this study is to understand the narratives and discourses around soil degradation in the rural communities in the southern region of Mali (Koumantou, Kolondieba and Yanfolila). The major droughts of the 1970s and 1980s profoundly disrupted the ecosystems of the Sahelian countries, with a major impact on productive land and causing famine that disastrously affected the populations of these countries. Regarding the data collection, focus groups will be used as the main methodology for data collection with the communities. Many focus groups will be organized with the pastoralists on one hand and with farmers on the other hand. Otherwise, a mixed focus group will take place with herders and farmers in a session. The goal of this approach is to confront the different understanding of soil degradation based on the activity (agriculture or animal breeding). In the framework of this research work, thematic analysis will be used to analyze data collected through interviews and surveys, which are the primary sources. Secondary sources will be explored, especially governmental agencies and NGO reports. The thematic analysis is prioritized because it is one of the most efficient techniques to analyze qualitative data.

After that, through the Water Development Partnership, I was selected to pursue master programme at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands. The scholarship was open for Sahel countries (Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso). Finally, I am laureate of the Global Partnership Network through Thomas Sankara scholarship to conduct a PhD at Universite de Kara in Togo.”
