Institutional Responses to Sexual Violence in Ningo-Prampram District, Ghana

Sexual violence is a major public health and human rights issue in Ghana with long-term effects on survivors and society. In Ghana, institutions such as the Police, Health Service, Department of Social Welfare and Judiciary are mandated to prevent and respond to sexual violence through established policies, procedures, and support mechanisms. However, the continued occurence of sexual violence and concerns regarding survivors’ access to justice, care, and support raise questions about the effectiveness of institutional responses. Examining these responses is essential for identifying gaps and strenghtening systems that support survivors.

The study aims to examine institutional responses to sexual violence in Ningo-Prampram District, Ghana. Specifically, (1) To analyse the policies put in place by key institutions to address sexual violence; (2) To examine the procedures followed in reporting cases; (3) To investigate the institutional responses experienced by survivors; (4) To identify challenges faced by the institutions; (5) To develop recommendations to improve responses.

I am currently pursuing a PhD in Development Studies at the University of Cape Coast, with Gender as my elective area of study.”
