PhD Project Title

Impacts socio-économiques et environnementaux de la Grande Muraille Verte (GMV) au Sénégal (Translation: Socio-economic and environmental impacts of the Great Green Wall (GGW) in Senegal)

Abstract

In June 2005, at the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Saharawi States (CENSAD) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the concept of a Green Wall (GMV) from Senegal to Djibouti was launched to combat desertification. In 2007, the idea was endorsed by the Union Africaine in the Initiative Grande Muraille Verte pour le Sahara et le Sahel (IGMVSS) for 11 countries in a first phase (Sénégal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigéria, Soudan, Tchad, Ethiopia, Erythrée and Djibouti). Since COP21 in Paris in 2015, the commitment has been to restore 100 million hectares of land, to sequester 250 million tons of carbon and to create 10 million jobs by 2030, which puts this project in third place among the global and regional initiatives for land restoration following the Bonn Challenge and the New York Declaration on Forests.

This doctoral thesis aims to contribute to the actualization of the research done on this initiative in Sénégal through two (2) fundamental questions: what are the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the IGMVSS in the areas concerned after more than 15 years of existence? What innovative solutions can be implemented to improve the positive aspects and reduce the negative ones?
