As digitalization advances, IT design determines how people can engage with the world. Designing socially desirable IT systems requires not only technical development but also the implementation of normative requirements grounded in democratic values. In other words, this means that IT design must translate normative requirements into design proposals. AI systems, particularly those based on machine learning technologies, are becoming hybrid systems—that is, systems that closely integrate human and machine actions according to their respective capabilities. The multitude of roles that people assume in these systems presents the major challenge of updating traditional IT system design methodologies to suit hybrid systems. In addition to the design goal of acceptance and acceptability, the question arises of how to involve people in the design process.
