Seit April 2023 ist Matthias Hügel als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Internationalen Zentrum für Hochschulforschung (INCHER) sowie am Fachgebiet für Wirtschaftspolitik, Innovation und Entrepreneurship der Universität Kassel tätig.

Seine Forschung ist an der Schnittstelle von Hochschul- und Innovationsforschung angesiedelt. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Organisation akademischer Wissensproduktion und ihren Verbindungen zu Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft. Er untersucht, wie institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen und organisationaler Wandel die Produktion, Zirkulation und Anwendung von Wissen prägen. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit stehen Hochschulen und Forschende, ihre Karriereverläufe und Kooperationsnetzwerke sowie ihre Aktivitäten im Wissens- und Technologietransfer.

Matthias Hügel studierte Wirtschaftspädagogik an der Universität Mannheim sowie International Economy and Business an der Andrássy Universität Budapest. Von 2018 bis 2023 war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Mikroökonomik der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena tätig. Dort schloss er im Mai 2024 seine Promotion in Wirtschaftswissenschaften unter der Betreuung von Professor Uwe Cantner ab. In seiner Dissertation untersuchte er die Prozesse, durch die der Wissens- und Technologietransfer zwischen Hochschulen, Forschungseinrichtungen und der Wirtschaft initiiert und weiterentwickelt wird.
