Terms of use GitLab service

The following conditions apply in addition to the usage regulations of the IT Service Center (ITS) of the University of Kassel.

Range of functions and user group

The GitLab service is a web service for the organized, reliable and secure management of files that are versioned with the Git software (in so-called "Git repositories"). The service is available to members and affiliates of the University of Kassel (hereinafter referred to as "users").

In the GitLab service, each user has access to so-called projects, each of which can contain a Git repository and other project-related data (e.g. a wiki and a discussion platform). Users can exchange project data between the GitLab service and their end devices via a web browser. The Git software is available for various operating systems to synchronize Git repositories between end devices and the GitLab service. In addition to each user's own namespace, user groups can also be created that provide separate namespaces for projects. For collaborative work, projects can be made accessible in various levels, from read to write access.

Users who use the GitLab Pages function must take care of a privacy policy, an imprint and all other necessary legal documents for the website they offer before publishing a website via GitLab Pages.

Storage space

All users have access to 50 projects, each with up to 10 GB of memory.

Private use

The storage of private data not related to activities at the University of Kassel is expressly prohibited.

Performance monitoring

It is expressly forbidden to use the GitLab service to monitor the behavior or performance of individuals.

Data security

Communication between the user's end devices and the GitLab service is encrypted. The stored data is stored unencrypted on access-restricted storage systems of the ITS. A backup of the data is created at regular intervals on the ITS's access-restricted systems. The GitLab service is suitable for storing data with normal protection requirements.

Responsibility for content

The respective users with ownership rights (highest possible user role) in a project or user group are solely responsible for the conformity of the contents of the stored data with legal provisions, even if these originate from other users. In particular, it must be ensured that the regulations listed in ยง 5 of the user regulations are not violated. Users undertake not to make any data accessible to unauthorized persons. Users with ownership rights in a project or user group are recommended to check their data content regularly. In addition to the content and data, the names of projects must also be chosen in such a way that they comply with the user regulations. The operators and the University of Kassel accept no responsibility for any misuse.

Deletion of user account and data

If the validity of the personal UniAccount is lost, the access authorization to the GitLab service expires and access is blocked. The data assigned to a user is retained for a period of 12 months after the access authorization expires. The user account and all projects in the user's own namespace are then deleted. At the same time, the direct personal reference of other personal data in the form of contributions (e.g. tickets, comments, merge requests) to projects in other namespaces is removed. Contributions to Git repositories are not changed.

Subject to changes to these terms of use

The operators reserve the right to change the conditions for using the service.
